Why you sometimes see a “train” of lights

Right after a launch, a new batch of Starlink satellites travels in a tight line, so they cross the sky one after another like a train. Over the following days and weeks they spread out and climb to their working orbits, and they get much harder to spot.

When to look

Like other satellites, Starlinks are only visible when they’re in sunlight and your sky is dark, mostly in the hour or two after sunset or before sunrise.

A note on data

There are thousands of Starlink satellites, so turning them on downloads more data than the regular satellite layer. You can switch them off again in Settings.

Questions

Why can’t I see most of the Starlinks on the map?

Most are too faint to notice, especially once they’ve reached their working orbits. They’re easiest to see in the days right after a launch, while they’re still low and bunched together.

Can I see a Starlink train tonight?

Only if there’s been a launch in the last few days and the train passes over you while it’s in sunlight. Turn on Starlink and look for a tight line of dots.
