Why sunrise and sunset move
The Sun rises due east and sets due west only around the March and September equinoxes. In the Northern Hemisphere it rises and sets farther north in summer and farther south in winter, so the spot on the horizon shifts through the year.
Golden hour and blue hour
Golden hour is when the Sun is low, from about 6° above the horizon to just below it, and the light turns warm and soft. Blue hour comes right after sunset, while the Sun is a few degrees below the horizon and the sky glows deep blue.
Twilight and darkness
Civil twilight lasts until the Sun is 6° below the horizon, while there’s still enough light to see without lamps. The sky is fully dark once the Sun is 18° below, which is when faint stars and the Milky Way come out.
Questions
Is it safe to point my phone at the Sun?
Pointing your phone is fine, since the site doesn’t use the camera. Just don’t look straight at the Sun yourself, and never through binoculars or a telescope.
Why are the times different from my weather app?
Sunrise and sunset are when the top edge of the Sun crosses a flat horizon, allowing for the air bending its light. Hills, buildings and how high up you are can shift what you actually see by a few minutes.
